Hurricane Gudrun

This photo won the photo of the year prize in our local newspaper, Sydsvenskan. It was taken by a hobby pilot and shows an area of the forest in Smaland that was damaged by hurricane Gudrun last winter. Vehicles left a pattern as they removed the trees that had blown over.

I think Smaland is the name of the place we leave our kids when we shop at IKEA. Now, am I wrong, or is it rare for tropical storms to hit Sweden?

That's a great name for the kid park-- its where IKEA's founder is from. It's also the region from which the most people emigrated to the US. Yep, its rare but it does happen that we get powerful storms, up to hurricane strength, in the winter. I can remember two in the last 5 years. One prediction of global climate models is that there will be more storms with lots of precipitation at high latitudes.
