Some photos
Here are some pictures from my recent trip to CA and MN. First is a picture of our old apartment building in Pasadena. The grapefruit tree that used to be outside our bedroom window is no more, but the banana is still standing. Next is a look under the hood of my parent's new Prius hybrid. It is a wonder to drive. Finally, a shot of the construction site at Morehouse Park in Owatonna. They are removing the dam and replacing it with rapids. There are clear benefits for the aquatic environment, and they say that the water level upstream of the new rapids will not be changed. That's important because if winters ever start being cold again like when I was a kid, the latent skating rinks just upstream can be put to use. Plus the water level at Lake Kohlmeyer depends on the level in the mis-named Straight River. (Everybody who is anybody calls it 'The Pit', and even though that's where the municipal beach is, it really is a gravel pit and not a lake.) There was nothing special about the old dam, just a concrete slab really. Years ago we would ride our bikes to the park and catch bullheads just below the waterfall.

Matt, Last I heard only one half of the dam in Owatonna will be replaced with rapids. The conservation neophytes in town thought it would be disasterous to the image of the city if we lost such a civic icon.
Ask anyone form outside of Owatonna what comes to mind first and I'm sure it won't be the dam!
Conservation and ecology need to take a larger role in our everyday life if we plan to reconcile the damage we have done. I say "Save the fishies; damn the dam!"
Joe
PS - Let me know next time you come to MN.
Damn the dam! I laugh! I know, its just a slab of cement. There is even a Committee to Save the Damn. What has the world come to!?
So all you other folks, what comes to mind when you think of Owatonna? A friend of college overheard some roadies talking, one of them said, 'You remember those drunk guys in the beer tent at the Steel County Fair who squirted ketchup all over?' The only problem with my recent visit to MN was that it was much too short.
what comes to mind for me, as someone from outside Owatonna?
1) National Farmer's Bank Bldg
2) Cabella's
in that order.
Hey. I thought the bank was a Frank Lloyd Wright building, but Wikipedia says it is Louis Sullivan???
Yep, good old Louie.
Apparently he was going to design the High School too but at the last minute somebody talked the school board out of it?
