Here is a great article on the industry of generating the appearance of scientific doubt in order to stop legislative action. Several interesting examples are given of how industry lobbyists were able to prevent sensible environmental standards for beryllium, lead, mercury, vinyl chloride, chromium, benzene, benzidine, nickel, and a long list of other toxic chemicals and medications.
