Sealed hub in cold weather

Picture from 'Elegy for Sturmey-Archer'

Whenever the mercury drops below freezing I have trouble shifting gears on my bike. Actually it becomes impossible to shift. The bike has a 4-speed internal gear hub. Can anyone offer advice?

Because the Shimano hubs don't have oil ports, you'd need to dissassemble the hub to change to a lighter weight oil. And it's lighter weight oil that is needed to prevent this problem.

Some people recommend using oil intended for marine environments. I've had good luck with light, synthetic chain lube on my Sturmey Archer 3-speed hubs. They have oil ports. Actually, only the old ones have oil ports. They don't include them anymore.

It makes no sense to me that the don't consider cold-weather riders when they design these things.
